buttonAbout Amazing Katie and her Amazing Giant Cabbage

Launch My Dream! Charity T-Shirt Design Contest 2008 Winner, 10 year old Katie Stagliano with brother John Michael and the 40 lb. cabbage she grew to feed 300 people at her local food bank!

Pictured above: Amazing Kids! Launch My Dream! Charity T-Shirt Design Contest 2008 winner, 10 year old Katie Stagliano and brother, John Michael, posing with her 40 pound cabbage she grew to feed nearly 300 people at a local soup kitchen!

10 year old Katie Stagliano was a third grader in Summerville, South Carolina when she decided to plant a cabbage seedling, which she had brought home from school, in her backyard.
Katie lovingly nurtured the vegetable until it grew, and grew, and grew...to an amazing 40-pound size!!!

While she and her family were considering what to do with the humongous cabbage, they heard about the Fields to Families program, which brings fresh produce to the needy. The organization suggested that Katie donate her cabbage to a local soup kitchen at the Tricounty Family Ministries in North Charleston, South Carolina.

Little did Katie know that the little seedling she had planted only months earlier would soon become part of a meal which served nearly 300 people!! The meal fed many of the area's families in need who are served by Tricounty Family Ministries.

Katie was especially moved to learn that so many children today are facing hunger. Inspired by the experience, Katie wanted to help teach other children about how they, too, can make a difference. She wanted to help them learn to plant a seedling that could one day feed many needy people just as she had done.

So when Katie heard about Amazing Kids! (www.amazing-kids.org) and our Launch My Dream! Initiative and T-Shirt Design Contest, she decided to enter in hopes of winning, so she could spread the word to other children while helping to make her own dream, "No Hungry Children!" come true one day.

buttonKatie's Amazing Dream for her Future:

Here, in her own words, is Katie's amazing dream for the future:

"My Dream for my amazing future is to make sure no children go to bed hungry. I grew a cabbage and donated it to a soup kitchen. It alone helped feed 275 people. I saw hundreds and hundreds of people and children lining up to eat my cabbage.

"If I could teach kids to grow vegetables, we could make sure no children go to bed hungry. It would only take a packet of seeds, water, soil, and some TLC ("tender loving care") and any kid could grow vegetables in their backyard.*

"My Dream is that kids working together can make sure no children go to bed hungry. My Dream is so simple it would only take a seedling."

(*Editor's Note: If you don't have a backyard, you can also plant seedlings in a window box or planter, or a city garden, a roof top garden, or even in a friend or family member's garden, etc.)

If you are a kid, teen or adult and want to help Katie in her dream to fight childhood hunger, you can contact your local food bank or soup kitchen to find out how you can help. You can search for a food bank that serves your local community on the Feeding America website: http://feedingamerica.org/our-network/food-bank-spotlight.aspx

Just scroll down to the zip code entry field in the lower half of the right column and enter your zip code or state.
